KINGSTON, Ont. (September 20, 2009) – Second half goals from
Renee MacLellan of Kingston and
Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. paced the Queen's Women's Soccer team to a 3-1 win over the Nipissing Lady Lakers on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
MacLellan, who was a force all afternoon, causing havoc for the Lady Lakers back line, scored the game winner in the 67th minute.
Although the Gaels were in control for most of the game, the first half of play had the teams all square through 45 minutes of play. Queen's would open the scoring thanks to a goal in the 15th minute from winger
Jennifer Hutchinson of St. John's, Nfld. Hutchinson broke off the right wing and beat Nipissing keeper Samantha Behm with a shot to the far post to gave the Gaels the lead.
Nipissing would be undeterred by the deficit and picked up their offensive attack 30 minutes into the game. Off a corner in the 32nd minute, Alex Instance would get a head on the ball and beat Queen's keeper
Chantel Marson of London to even the score going into the half.
But the second half was all Gaels. MacLellan would give the Gaels the lead after some great work by fellow striker
Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay. Less than four minutes later, Hutchinson broke in alone on the right wing again and this time set up Filion to seal the victory for Queen's.
Marson made five saves in the game for the win while her counterpart Behm stopped three shots in the loss.
The women's next game is next Saturday when they play cross-town rivals the RMC Paladins at RMC. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
