KINGSTON, Ont. (September 19, 2009) –
Lucas Azeredo Lobo scored the Gaels lone goal as Queen's Men's Soccer team lost a heartbreaker to the Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 2-1 at Richardson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Queen's Gaels applied early pressure in the first half, but the game quickly became a heated and evenly played match. Laurentian striker, Rudy Muteba, broke the tie midway through the first half with a swift kick from the top of the 18-yard box that found its way to the back of the Gaels' net.
Within minutes, however, Queen's had a response with a dazzling assist from
Nathan Klemencic to set up Kingston native Lobo for the equalizer.
Before the end of the first half, Laurentian got called for a foul in the 18-yard box which gave the Gaels a chance to take the lead with a penalty kick, but Laurentian keeper Scott Cliff made a diving save.
Tied going into the second half both teams struggled to take control of the game. It would be the Voyageurs who would break the deadlock when Rudy Muteba scored his second goal of the afternoon.
Pat Zanetti came close to retying the game for the Gaels with a header off a throw-in, but Laurentian keeper was able to get a fist on it to, punching it just high of the cross bar.
The Queen's men's soccer team will be back in action against the Nipissing Lakers at 2:15 tomorrow at Richardson Stadium.
