KINGSTON, Ont. (September 13, 2009) – A 31st minute goal off the head of
Jordan Brooks (Angus, Ont.) gave the Queen's Gaels Men's Soccer team (2-0-1) a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-1-1) on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Despite the victory, the Gaels got off to a slow start as Toronto controlled possession for much of the opening 20 minutes. However, the Gaels defence, anchored by senior
Michael Zanetti (Carp, Ont.), denied every Blues attack.
Eventually, Queen's found their game and began to generate offensive chances of their own. They would finally strike in the 31st minute when a throw-in by
Andrew Nador (Kingston) found Brooks' head and he made no mistake in depositing the ball into the back of the net.
Before the half was out, Brooks nearly struck again but this time his header sailed wide of the Varsity Blues' net.
In the second half, Toronto turned up their intensity which gave them numerous opportunities on Gaels keeper
Sean Martin-Courtright (Calgary). Their best chance came off a cross into the box which found the head of forward Nordo Gooden but he missed wide of the net, preserving the Queen's victory.
Martin-Courtright, who picked up his second win of the season, made 2 saves in the victory. Toronto's keeper John Smits recorded 3 saves in the loss.
The Men will be back in action next weekend as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, September 19th. Game time is scheduled for 2:15 pm at Richardson Stadium.
