KINGSTON, Ont. (September 13, 2009) – The Queen's Women's Soccer team (1-1-1) battled to a 0-0 draw with the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-0-1) on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The first half saw the team's trade chances early on. In the third minute, a Toronto opportunity off a corner was cleared off the line by rookie defender
Mikyla Kay (West Vancouver). Queen's would respond with a chance of their own in the sixth minute when forward
Kelli Chamberlain (North Bay) broke in on the right side but her attempted chip over Toronto's keeper Mary Anne Barnes sailed over the bar.
For the remainder of the half, the teams battled for possession in the midfield but neither team could generate a sustained period of attack.
In the second half, the Gaels came storming out of the break with three consecutive opportunities in the opening 10 minutes. The best chance came off the foot of senior forward
Renee MacLellan (Kingston) but her shot from the top of the box just missed over the bar.
Late in the game, the Varsity Blues had more than their fair share of opportunities to pull out the win but Gaels keeper
Chantel Marson (London) was there to deny them each time. She finished the day with 7 saves while Barnes made 5 saves for Toronto.
Queen's will be back in action next weekend when they host the Laurentian Lady Vees on Saturday, September 19 at Richardson Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
