KINGSTON, Ont. (September 12, 2009) – The Gaels Women's Rugby team started their season on a positive note as they defeated the visiting Trent Excalibur by a score of 36-30.
The game was a back-and-forth affair as the team's traded the lead throughout the entire contest. Queen's stormed out to a 10-3 lead after 21 minutes before the Excalibur battled back with two quick trys and took a 20-17 lead into halftime.
In the second half, team captain
Shauna Geerts (Toronto) helped the Gaels restore their lead with a great individual effort, breaking four tackles on her way to scoring Queen's fourth try of the game.
However, Trent refused to back down and took a 30-29 lead late in the contest. That was when the hero of the game, rookie
Katie Chu (Toronto), scored her first career try to give the Gaels a lead they would not relinquish.
Other Gaels to record trys included
Andrea Wadsworth (Toronto) with two,
Lauren Prufer (Caledon) with one and
Karlye Wong (Ottawa) with one.
Peggy-Rae Carswell (Stittsville) chipped in with three converts.
The Women next see action on Sunday, September 20 as they travel to Toronto to battle the Varsity Blues. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
