Laurier takes series lead 1-0

Kingston, Ont. (March 5, 2009) – Wilfrid Laurier exploded for seven goals routing the Queen's Gaels 7-0 in the opening game of the OUA women's hockey semifinal on Thursday at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

Laurier's Alicia Martin of Etobicoke, Ont., scored just 39 seconds into the game lifting the Golden Hawks to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Five different Hawks scored in the game with Martin and Kaley Powers of Kingston, Ont. each registering two goals. Andrea Bevan of Collingwood, Ont., Lauren Barch of Burlington, Ont., Katherine Shirriff of Carrying Place, Ont. all recorded one goal each.

Laurier's Cindy Eadie of Brantford, Ont., stopped all 18 shots faced for the win while the tandem of Melissa John Unionville, Ont., and Karissa Savage of Calgary turned aside 16 of 23 shots.

Laurier was three-for-four on the power play while Queen's did not score on five chances.

The best of three series now moves to the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, where game two will be played on Saturday, March 7th at 3:00 p.m.
