Queen’s secure first-round bye

Gaels take second place heading into the Playoffs
Kingston, Ont. (February 7, 2009) – Queen's captures second place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) on Saturday defeating the Ryerson Rams 3-2 inside Bartlett Gymnasium.

Heading into the final set Queen's received the news that Western had fallen to Waterloo 3-1.The news pushed the Gaels into a higher gear excelling them to victory and into the second place position.

Ryerson, who was battling with Waterloo for the final playoff spot, took the Gaels a tough five-set match, defeating the Gaels 26-24 in the first set. Queen's rallied back taking the next two sets 25-23, and 25-20 before Ryerson forced a final set taking the fourth 25-21.The Gaels persevered winning the fifth 15-10 ending the Rams hopes for a playoff berth.

Jeff DeMeza of Calgary, led the charge for the Gaels picking up a team high nine digs, along with 14 points. Joining DeMeza with 14 points was Sam Pedlow of Barrie, Ont., and Michael Amoroso of Toronto while second year Physical Education student Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., produced a team high 16 points, knocking down 14 kills, and picking up two stuff blocks.

Chris Mclaughlin of Ottawa posted a game high 21 points hitting 20 kills, and one ace for the Rams, while setter Greg Marszalek of Ottawa recorded a game high 15 digs in the loss. 

Queen's receives a bye in the first round of the post-season and hosts the OUA Semi-Finals Saturday, February 14. The Gaels will await their opponent who will be either Western or Waterloo. McMaster, who finished a top of the standings, will play either Guelph or Laurier, in the other Semi-Final game on Saturday. For playoff ticket and scheduling information please call 613.533.2500.
