Kingston, Ont. (February 7, 2009) – The Toronto Varsity Blues scored twice in the final period including the game winner with just 19.1 seconds remaining to sink the Queen's Gaels 3-2 in women's Ontario University Athletics (OUA) hockey.
Queen's had built a 2-1 lead heading into the final eight minutes of the game on goals by Kelsey Thompson of Martintown, Ont., and
Kristin Smith of Toronto. Thompson scored her 15th of the season on a power-play at 4:47 of the first and Smith added her second of the year midway through the third to take the lead.
Toronto tied the game with 7:45 remaining on a goal by Emily Milto of Ottawa and then Lindsay Hill of Ajax, Ont., netted the game winner at 19:41 to earn the Blue's 15th win of the season.
Varsity Blues goalie Kendyl Valenta of Brampton, Ont., turned aside 26 shots for the win while Gaels first-year goalie
Karissa Savage of Calgary made 25 in the loss.
Queen's record moves to 11-10-0-1 and they occupy the sixth place in the OUA standings with 23 points. Brock, who entered play today tied with the Gaels, topped the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 to take sole possession of fifth place.
The Gaels will try to avenge today's loss to the third-place Varsity Blues on Sunday when they meet again the Kingston Memorial Centre. Game time is scheduled for 2:30pm.
