Toronto (February 25, 2009) - The Toronto Varsity Blues ended the Queen's men's basketball season with a 63-48 victory in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) east division quarter finals on Wednesday night in Toronto.
Fifth-year forward
Robert Shaw of Toronto finished his career in a Queen's uniform by leading the Gaels in scoring with 12 points. Shaw finished with his best season at Queen's recording 126 points, averaging 5.7 per game and pulling down 74 rebounds. He shot 50% in the quarter final loss to Toronto and led Queen's in three pointers.
Queen's had a two point advantage heading into the break 29-27, but had a disastrous third quarter which saw Toronto score 20 while the Gaels only mustered nine. With the score 49-38 heading into the last frame, the Gaels were unable to make up the difference finishing 63-48.
The University of Toronto was led by Ahmed Nazmi of Cairo, Egypt who had a game high 14 points while brining down 11 boards.
Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey, who was Queen's regular season leading scorer, finished with nine points and five rebounds while
Dan Bannister of Markham, Ont. recorded seven points.
No. 3 seeded Toronto now advances to face second seeded Ottawa in the OUA quarter final game set for February 28 in Ottawa.
Queen's entered the post-season with a 7-15 record and were without perennial all-star
Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. since January 16. Without Leger the Gaels would finish 1-10 and suffer a ten game losing streak before winning their final game of the regular season against Royal Military College (RMC). Previously, Leger had played in 11 games producing 193 points averaging just over 16 points per game and was the only Gael to hit the century mark in rebounds with 100 even.
