London, Ont., (February 22, 2009)- Melissa John of Unionville, Ont. stopped 41 shots leading the Queen's women's hockey team to the post-season with a 3-2 victory over the Western Mustangs.
John finishes the 2008-09 regular season with eight victories playing in 20 of the Gaels 27 games, posting a 2.71 goals against average. She faced 564 shots placing her in eight place among Ontario University Athletics (OUA) netminders this season.
Queen's started off slow being out-shot 22-3 in the first period and taking four penalties. John stood strong stopping all 22 giving the Gaels a chance going into the second period.
Kerstin Van Bolderen of Medina, Ohio, USA, opened the scoring two minutes into the second frame on the powerplay giving Queen's 1-0 led. Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., made it 2-0 mid-way through the period.
Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont., Michelle Hunt of Mississauga, Ont., and Kristin Smith of Toronto recording the assists in the victory.
Defencemen Shelby Aitcheson of London, Ont., scored the game winning goal scoring at the 1:57 mark of the third period.
Brittany Buck of Etobicoke, Ont., and Chantal Morais of Guelph, Ont., produced the offence for Western with Buck scoring both goals, and Morais picking up the two assists.
The Gaels finish the regular season with a 13-13-0-1 record and will travel to the University of Toronto next weekend to play the third seeded and No. 8 nationally ranked Varsity Blues in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
Queen's holds the regular season edge over Toronto taking the series 2-1 outscoring the Varsity Blues 11-7.
