Warriors edge Queen's 2-1

Kingston, Ont. (February 14, 2009) - Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., scored the Gaels lone goal as the Waterloo Warriors upset the Queen's women's hockey team 2-1 on Saturday.

Thomson's team leading 16th goal opened the scoring mid-way through the first period on the powerplay but the Gaels failed to convert on their six other powerplay opportunities going 1-7.

Waterloo's leading scorer Kelly Mclean of St. George, Ont., tied the game up in the second with both teams playing four on four.

Goaltender's Melissa John of Unionville, Ont. (Queen's) and Erica Bridgewater of Georgetown, Ont.(Waterloo) were both sharp giving up one goal each heading into the final period.  

John turned aside 33 shots while Bridgewater stopped 28.

Queen's and Waterloo battled back and forth with only one shot separating them in the third period. With 20 seconds left, Waterloo's eighth and final shot of the period was the biggest as forward Randi Lynn Wilson of Dublin, Ont., snipped a short-handed goal giving the Warriors the lead and the eventual victory.
Queen's remains in the sixth and final playoff spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with two games left. 

The Gaels will travel to face the Windsor Lancers on Saturday February 21, and close out the 2008-09 regular season in London, Ont., against Western on Sunday.

Both Windsor and Western have three games left and are chasing the Gaels for the final playoff spot. Windsor sits just three points back of Queen's while the Western Mustangs remains five points back after a 3-0 loss to Guelph this afternoon.
