Gaels earn OUA silver medal; advance to CIS Championship

| By:
TORONTO (November 8, 2009) – The Gaels won the OUA silver medal after falling in a shootout 4-2 to the York Lions in the OUA Gold Medal match at York University Sunday afternoon.

The game was a showdown of the goalkeepers as Elena Corry of Hamilton, Ont. fought to keep the Gaels in the game with spectacular saves throughout the game and both periods of overtime.

The game was evenly matched for the entire 120 minutes, as Renee MacLellan of Kingston, Ont. and Jennifer Hutchinson of St. John's, Nfld. kept York keeper Sarah Fiorini on her toes for the entire game. The York's offensive attack put equal pressure on Corry who refused to crack under the pressure.

The Gaels put a final push in the final minutes of the game with their typical smooth passing game, but despite their efforts, the game was forced into a shootout.

In the shootout, the Gaels had a strong line-up of sharp shooters. Summer Rybicki of Burlington, Ont. and Brienna Shaw of Vancouver, B.C. beat the York keeper, but Angela Sullivan of Scarborough, Ont. and Chantal McFetridge of Kelowna, B.C. came up just short. This was not enough to beat the Lions who scored on all four of their opportunities.

Despite the loss, the Gaels continue on to CIS National Championships next weekend. Stay tuned to www.gogaelsgo.com for more information on the tournament.
