Men's Basketball comes up short against McMaster

KINSTON Ont. (November 7, 2009) – Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey had 12 points and four assists in the Gaels' 56-50 loss against the McMaster Marauders in Bartlett Gym Saturday night.

From the opening tip off it could easily be seen that the match up was going to be a heated, high energy game with both teams having huge fan support in the stands. Ondul kept the ball moving, while Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. continued to dominate the low paint. This allowed the Gaels to have a three point lead at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter saw the Gael's lead slip, as turnovers lead to easy baskets for the Marauders. Leger and Timothy Boyle of Belleville, Ont. put points up on the board, but the Gaels were still outscored by McMaster 18-9 in the quarter. The final score at the end of the half was 31-25 for McMaster.

The high energy pace of the game remained in the third as the Gaels attempted to close the six point deficit. Leger continued to work the boards to keep the momentum for the Gaels. The Gaels were down by six, with just seconds on the clock when Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont. hit a half-court buzzer beater to bring the Gaels within three.

With tight defence and a physical game, both teams struggled to put points on the board in the fourth quarter. The Gaels did not get any lucky breaks as the ball did not want to go into the net. They managed to bring the game within one point with a clutch three pointer, but were unable to tie up the game in the final minute of play. The final score was 56-50 for the McMaster Marauders.

The Gaels head to Waterloo next weekend to face the University of Waterloo Warriors on Friday night and Wilfred Laurier University Golden Hawks Saturday night.
