KINGSTON, Ont. (November 28, 2009) -
Payton Liske of Welland, Ont., scored a pair of goals and
Mackenzie Ball made 28 saves as the Queen's Gaels knocked off the Concordia Stingers 4-2 on Saturday night at the Memorial Centre.
The win was the second straight for Queen's who improve to 7-6-1 while the Stingers fall to 3-12-0 on the year.
The Gaels would jump out to an early lead just 1:33 into the game when
Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Queen's controlled play for the majority of the period, firing 17 shots on Concordia goalie Maxime Joyal but only carried a one goal lead into the second.
The Stingers would even the score just 1:47 into the second as Marc-Andre Element scored his sixth of the season on a powerplay.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Gaels would net two goals in just over a minute a short while later. Liske scored his first of the contest on a powerplay before defenceman
Brendan Bureau of Amherstview, Ont., potted his first goal of the season.
In the third period, the Stingers would cut into the Gaels lead thanks to Element's second goal of the game. Once again, the Gaels responded quickly as Liske scored his second of the game and seventh of the season just 12 seconds later. It would be all the Gaels would need as Ball shut the door the rest of the way to pick up his seventh win of the season.
Queen's will wrap up the 2009 portion of their schedule next weekend when they travel to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens on Friday night and the Ottawa Gee Gees on Saturday night.
