LONDON, Ont. (November 22, 2009) – On the strength of a four-point game from
Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont., the No. 7 Queen's Gaels defeated the Western Mustangs by a score of 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Gaels improve to 9-2-1 on the season and have now won their last three games in a row.
The opening period saw the Gaels jump out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to
Kelsey Thomson's sixth goal of the season. For the rest of the period, Western would control the flow of the game and peppered Queen's goalie
Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., with 11 shots. However, they were unable to beat the Gaels netminder and Queen's took the lead into the second.
Western would finally breakthrough on a powerplay five minutes into the second as Ellie Seedhouse got one past Dodd-Moher to even things up at one.
The goal seemed to jumpstart the Gaels, who were playing their second game in less than 22 hours. Thomson, of Martintown, Ont., would score her second of the game less than four minutes later to restore the Gaels lead.
From there, Kench would take over the game for Queen's. First, she notched her fourth of the season on the powerplay before setting up
Kristin Smith of Toronto, and
Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., to give Queen's a 5-1 lead. Smith's and McHaffie's goals came 37 seconds apart late in the second.
With a comfortable lead heading into the third, the Gaels sat back defensively and Dodd-Moher kept the Mustangs off the scoreboard to secure the victory.
Dodd-Moher, who turned aside 29 shots in the win, continued her spectacular rookie season with the Gaels. She is currently second in the OUA in wins, goals against average and save percentage, behind only Laurier's veteran goalie Liz Knox in all three categories.
Multiple point games from Kench, Thomson, and
Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., also means that the Gaels currently have the top three scorers in the OUA. Conroy is tops with 20 points, followed by Thomson with 18 and Kench with 17.
The Gaels now have a full week off before their next game. They will travel to Oshawa next Sunday to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks at 3:30 pm.
