OSHAWA, Ont. (November 14, 2009) -
Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., scored the game-tying goal with less than a minute to play and then netted the winner in the shootout as the Gaels knocked off the UOIT Ridgebacks 4-3 on Saturday night.
For the Gaels, it was their second-straight victory and moves them above .500 on the season (5-4-1). The Ridgebacks fall to 4-5-1 with the shootout loss.
UOIT appeared to have the game in control in the first period as they outshot the Gaels 10-8 and took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
Jeffrey Johnstone of Etobicoke, Ont., gave the Gaels life just 58 seconds into the second period when he netter his second goal of the season.
After a powerplay goal restored the two goal lead for the Ridgebacks, captain
Jonathon Lawrance of Steinbach, Man., scored to cut the Gaels deficit to one as they headed into the third.
With time winding down, Derochie scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season to earn the Gaels a point by sending the game to overtime.
In the shootout, Derochie opened the scoring as the Gaels first shooter and
Mackenzie Ball of Shannonville, Ont., did the rest to earn the Gaels their fifth win of the season.
Ball had another solid performance for Queen's, turning aside 29 shots to pick up his fifth win of the year.
With points in their last three games, the Gaels will look to carry over that momentum next weekend when they host the Windsor Lancers in a two-game miniseries.
