WATERLOO Ont. (November 14, 2009) - Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. had 21 points and six rebounds to lead the Gaels to their first regular season victory with a 64-63 win over the No. 10 Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Hawks came out with an early lead against the Gaels, which they held for most of the first quarter. Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey tied the game up with one of his signature 3-pointers in the second quarter, and the Gaels finished the first half with a one point lead of 34-33.

The second half of the game was full of suspense as the score continued to go back and forth with the game tied 63-63 with less than a minute left on the clock. Queen's forward Bernard Burgesson of Port Hawkesbury, N.S., had two foul shots with 13.6 seconds left in the game. He missed the first foul shot, but the second made foul shot was all the Gaels needed to take the 64-63 win.

Leger had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals in the game, but he was by no means working alone. Ondul contributed 11 points, which included three 3-pointers. Rookie guard James Asefa of Toronto, Ont., led the team in assists with three, while Burgesson worked well in the low post collecting five rebounds.

The win over the Golden Hawks improves the Gaels record to 1-3.

The Gaels play next against the Windsor Lancers in Windsor next Friday evening.
