Ben Munroe scored his first goal of the season to clinch the Gaels victory Friday night
TORONTO (November 13, 2009) -
Joey Derochie and
Ben Munroe scored third period goals to lead the Gaels to a 5-3 win over the York Lions on Friday night in Toronto.
The win improved Queen's to 4-4-1 on the season while the Lions fell to 4-5-1.
After the Gaels fell behind 1-0 early in the first, the team quickly responded two minutes later thanks to a powerplay goal from Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.).
Clinton McCullough of Aurora, Ont. gave the Gaels the lead shortly thereafter with his second goal of the season.
Queen's would carry their momentum over to the second period as
Jeffrey Johnstone of Etobicoke, Ont., scored just 1 minute and 18 seconds into the frame.
Despite the deficit, the Lions continued to pressure the Gaels, firing 12 shots on Queen's goalie
Mackenzie Ball of Shannonville, Ont., in the second. Two of those shots would find the back of the net to even things up going into the third.
The trend of early period goals continued in the final frame as Derochie scored his second of the game and seventh of the season to put the Gaels in front. Munroe would seal the victory with a shorthanded goal late in the period to give Queen's their fourth win of the year.
Ball made 20 saves in the game to pick up his fourth victory of the season.
The Gaels continue their road trip tomorrow night when they battle the UOIT Ridgebacks. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
