NORTH BAY, Ont. (October 2, 2009) – Playing in front of a deafening crowd, the Queen's Gaels (1-0-0-0) played spoiler at the Nipissing Lakers' (0-0-0-1) first home game in OUA action knocking them off in a shootout by a score of 5-4.

Despite the large crowd of over 3,000, it was the Gaels who jumped out to the early lead. Clinton McCullough of Aurora, Ont., scored Queen's first goal of the season midway through the first period to silence the home crowd.

In the second period, team captain Jonathon Lawrance of Steinbach, Man., increased the Gaels lead to two with a shorthanded marker.

Late in the frame, Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man., and TJ Sutter of Redvers, Sask., scored goals 11 seconds apart to blow the game wide open and give the Gaels a four goal lead going into the third.

However, the Lakers were determined to send their fans home happy and they scored four unanswered goals in the third period to send the game to overtime.

With nothing solved in the extra period, the game headed to a shootout. After Payton Liske of Kingston, Ont., gave the Gaels the lead in the shootout, Queen's third and final shooter Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., sealed the win for his team.

With the Gaels not scheduled to play another OUA contest until October 18th, the team will travel to Pittsburgh, PA., to take on Robert Morris College in a pair of exhibition games next weekend.
