Kingston, Ont. (January 30, 2009) –
Bill Burke of Aurora, Ont., notched three points for the Queen's Gaels in a 4-3 victory on Slap Shot Night over the Ryerson Rams on Friday in Ontario University Athletics men's hockey.
The Gaels remain in the hunt for a final playoff position picking up two points on the Ottawa Gee Gees who lost 4-3 to UQTR on Friday. Queen's have 18 points while the Gee Gees have 22 with both teams having five games left.
Brady Morrison of Thamesville, Ont., turned aside 37 shots allowing three goals for the Gaels. Ryerson's Paul Gibson of St. Thomas, N.B., faced 21 shots allowing three goals. He was relieved late in the second period in favour of Louie George of Waterloo, Ont. George made 14 saves and gave up the game winner.
Burke was credited with two goals and an assist in the Gaels eighth win of the season while
Scott Kenway of Calgary tallied two assists in the game.
David Chubb of St. Georges, Nfld., and
Ben Heersink of Oakville, Ont., recorded the Gaels two other goals.
The game winning goal tallied by Burke was actually scored by a Ryerson defenseman. With approximately four minutes to play, Burke circled behind the Rams' net and attempted a centering pass. The Ryerson defenseman in front tried to sweep the puck behind the net, but wound up putting it past George.
Queen's battle the Toronto Varsity Blues tomorrow afternoon at 2:30pm. The Blues hold first place in the Mid-East division and a win over the Gaels tomorrow can clinch the division title.
NOTE: Friday's game was themed Slap Shot Night… the first 50 fans in attendance were given Hanson Brother style glasses and the game included several promotions in honour of the classic hockey movie.
