St. Catharines, Ont. (January 24, 2009) – A third-period power play goal was too much for the Queen's women's hockey team as the Brock Badgers defeated the Gaels 2-1 on Saturday in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) action.
Queen's drops to sixth place in the OUA, stalled with 19 points, having now suffered four straight defeats to open the calendar year. Brock, who entered play today tied with the Gaels now hold a two point advantage in the standings.
The two teams traded goals in the first period with the Badgers getting on the board first when Shannon McLeod of Port Dover, Ont., converted at 12:01. Queen's forward,
Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., evened the score minutes later with her 13th of the season. Assisting on the power play goal was
Elizabeth Kench Gananoque, Ont. and
Alison Bagg of Kingston, Ont.
Entering the third period, Queen's found itself short-handed after a
Shelby Aitcheson of London, Ont., interference penalty. Michelle Lee Innisfil, Ont., converted on the power play chance at 1:01 of the third handing Brock the win.
Melissa John (6-8-0) of Unionville, Ont. made 22 saves in the loss while Beth Clause of Hamilton, turned aside 20 shots for Brock.
Queen's rematch's Brock on Sunday with the game set for 3:00pm in St. Catharines.
