Kingston, Ont. (January 17, 2009) - It was déjà vu for the Queen's women's hockey team, falling twice to the York Lions in less than 24-hours. This time the Lions edged the Gaels 4-1.

Victoria Kauffmann of Whitby, Ont. scored the Gaels lone goal with Kristin Smith of Toronto and Cassandra Sparks of Stouffville, Ont. assisting at 16:29 of the second period.

York scored twice in the opening frame, once short-handed. They added their third in the second period before Kaufman made the score 3-1. With just over two minutes to play in the third they added an empty net goal to finish the scoring 4-1.

Scoring for York was Mandy Cole of North York, Ont., Riley Edwards of Kenora, Ont., Kelsey Webster of Duncan, B.C. and Jessica Turi of Mississauga, Ont. Cole also added an assist to record a team high two points.

Queen's outshot the Lions 35-31 with York's Sydney McMurter of Orillia, Ont. earning the win with 34 saves. Melissa John of Unionville, Ont. made 27 stops in the loss.

The Gaels were 0 for 11 on the power play today and are scoreless in their last 23 attempts. Their last power play goal came November 30 against Windsor.


On Friday the Lions defeated the Gaels 6-1. With the two losses, Queen's slides one point behind York in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) standings. The Gaels record is 9-8-1 with 19 points. Queen's sits in fifth place just ahead of Brock.
