Kingston, Ont. (January 16, 2009) – It was a tough night. Queen's was downed 6-1 by the York Lions in an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's hockey game on Friday night.
Melissa John of Unionville, Ont., took the loss in net moving her record to 6-5 on the season increasing her goals against average to 2.70, good for eighth in the OUA. John faced 44 shots allowing all six goals – a season high.
Despite the lopsided score, the Gaels looked respectable in the opening frame holding York to just one goal on 16 shots. In the second period, Queen's managed to outshoot York 16-7, but the Lions were able to notch two goals late to earn a 3-0 advantage heading into the third. The final frame saw the wheels come off - as Queen's would surrender three more goals .
On a positive note, the Gaels broke a five period scoreless streak when Kelsey Thompson of Martintown, Ont., netted her 13th goal of the campaign.
Danielle Beach of Port Perry, Ont. was the Lions top scorer netting two goals while Megan Slumskie of Baden, Ont., stopped 27 shots for her fifth win of the season.
Queen's will have a chance to rebound against the Lions as they meet in less than 24 hours in a rare weekend home double-header. Both teams will be looking for their 10th win of the season with Queen's record sitting at 9-6-1 and York's record at 9-10-0.
