Kingston, Ont. (January 10, 2009) – The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team exploded for 28 points in the third quarter to earn a 71-62 over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Saturday.
Second year forward Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. led all scorers in the game dropping 19 points and collecting four rebounds. In total four Gaels recorded over 10 points including Alaina Porter of Burlington, Ont. who finished with 16.
Lisa Furchner of Sudbury, Ont., was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line and was Laurentian's top scorer with 14 while Katie Goggins of Hanmer, Ont., and Kauri Lafontaine of Whitby, Ont., each had 11.
Queen's Jill Wheat of Marwayne, Alta., was the game's top rebounder pulling down eight boards.
The Gaels were down mos of the game with Laurentian holding a 21-17 advantage after the first quarter. Queen's Kendra Walker-Roche would pull the Gaels within two (31-29) before the half making a critical three-pointer at the buzzer.
With the momentum in their favour, the Gaels opened the third quarter with a 12-4 run en route to posting 28 in the third quarter. Queen's would hold Laurentian to just 16 in that quarter and 15 in the fourth to finish 71-62.
The team's record is 5-7 good for fourth place in the OUA East, but the Gaels are just four points behind first place Toronto and Carleton. Laurentian and Ottawa also sit ahead of Queen's in the standings.
Next weekend, the Gaels will travel to Toronto to take on Toronto and Ryerson. Queen's takes on Toronto Friday at 6:00pm while the Ryerson game is scheduled for Saturday at 6:00pm.
NOTES: Moore has scored a total of 72 points this week having collected a school high 40 points on Wednesday against Royal Military College and then 13 last evening against York University.
