Kingston, Ont. (January 10, 2009) – In a rematch of the last two OUA men's volleyball championships, the Queen's Gaels battled back from a 0-2 deficit to knock off the No. 3 ranked McMaster Marauders in a thrilling five-set match on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, Ont.
The Gaels' 24-26, 15-25, 25-22, 25-9, 17-15 victory was their ninethof the season and move within one game of McMaster for first place of the OUA. The Gaels, have 18 points and sit tied for second place with the Western Mustangs who also won on Saturday.
2007-08 OUA rookie of the year
Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. was the game's top scorer recording 23 points. He finished with 21 kills in the victory along with four digs.
Jeff Demeza of Calgary and
Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont. each had 14 points while setter
Daniel Rosenbaum of Hamilton, Ont. recorded 39 assists in the win.
Jeremy Groenveld of Welland, Ont. was McMaster's high scorer with 15 collecting 14 kills. Peter Hrkal of Caledon, Ont., had 13 points including 12 kills and six digs. Ryan Hudson of Winnipeg, Man., notched 36 assists.
Queen's and McMaster have met the previous two seasons in the OUA men's volleyball championship with the Gaels earning the crown in 2006-07 while McMaster edged Queen's last year in two straight match.
The Gaels will challenge the Guelph Gryphons during Primetime Community Volleyball Day on Sunday. Admission for minor volleyball players who wear their team's colours is free. The game is set for 4:00pm with tickets available at the door.
