SOCCER (W) - GAELS SCORE TWICE IN CONVINCING SEASON OPENER WIN
Kingston, Ontario (September 6,2008) – Queen's women's soccer took the field just moments after the men finished their game this afternoon to take on the Trent Excalibur.  The Gaels came out on top 2–0.
Trent goaltender Melissa Wares of Tecumseh, Ont. kept the Excalibur in the game with some key saves. However the Gaels offensive attack was tough to over-come.  The Gaels had over 18 corner kicks in the second half but were unable to capitalize.
The first half was a physical battle with the Gaels keeping the ball deep in the Trent end. After minutes of pressure the Gaels pushed through and Sara Buckham of North Bay, Ont. slipped the ball passed the Trent goalie to open the scoring.
The start of the second half was just as physical as the first. Both Trent and the Gaels battled hard with ball possession staying in the Excalibur end throughout.
Jennifer Pentesco of Minden, Ont. added the second goal for the Gaels on a penalty kick at the 39:12 minute mark of the second half.
The Gaels had numerous chances but could not connect on some set plays that if connected could have opened the scoring up.
Coach McDowell was please with the effort but knows there are some areas to work on.
“We had a lot of pressure with some key design plays, but were unable to put them away. We will have to work on that for the next game which will be a tough challenge.”
The Gaels head on the road tomorrow when the play at Carleton University at 3:15pm.
