Hamilton (September 11, 2008) – Another season of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) field hockey begins on the campus of McGill University in Montreal on Friday as the Martlets play host to the Queen's Gaels and Carleton Ravens.
Each team will play each other once, starting at 9 a.m. when Carleton faces McGill. There will be no rest for the weary, as McGill then squares off against Queen's at 12:30 p.m. The late game features Carleton and Queen's at 3 p.m. The remainder of opening weekend takes place at the University of Western Ontario.
On Saturday evening, the Mustangs play host to the Waterloo Warriors at TD Waterhouse Stadium beginning at 8 p.m. A full slate of games are on tap on Sunday in London, featuring the Mustangs, Warriors, Guelph Gryphons, Toronto Varsity Blues and York Lions. The Gryphons are the defending OUA champions, winning the first field hockey title in school history last October in a 2-1 decision against Toronto.
Turnabout was fair play for the Varsity Blues the following week, however, when they defeated the Gryphons 1-0 in overtime to claim the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) title. The Varsity Blues have been perennial favourites on the OUA field hockey circuit, winning five championships this decade and 27 in total. Toronto has won 10 national championships.
The OUA title will be awarded the weekend of Oct. 24 to 26 in Toronto. For the complete field hockey schedule, visit
