Ottawa (December 3, 2008) – Queen's hockey player
Becky Conroy of Penbroke, Ont. captured the female Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) athlete of the week for the period ending November 30, 2008. Calgary volleyball player Omar Langford of Toronto was named the male recipient.
Conroy, a third-year arts and science student from Pembroke, Ont., scored the winning goal in back-to-back games last weekend to lead the Gaels (9-5-1) to a 1-0 shutout of Western Ontario and a 5-1 victory over Windsor. The 5-foot-2 forward, who leads the OUA in scoring going into the December break with 12 goals and 22 points, broke a scoreless tie 3:02 into the third period Saturday against Western, then added two markers and one assist on Sunday in the win over Windsor.
Memorial basketball player Victoria Thistle, Bishop's basketball player Amanda Piribauer and Simon Fraser volleyball player Krystyna Adams were also nominated for the women's award.
Langford, a fourth-year humanities student from Toronto, tallied 54 kills for a 6.75 kill-per-set average as the No. 4-ranked Dinos (7-3) swept a two-game series at Regina. The 6-foot-2 right side posted similar numbers in the two four-set victories, racking up 27 kills while committing only eight errors for a .396 hitting percentage on Friday, and following up with 27 kills and only six errors for a .447 ratio on Saturday.
