Hamilton (November 9, 2008) – In a rematch of last year's Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men's volleyball championship, the Queen's Gaels were defeated 3-1 by the No. 2 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders.
Queen's record drops to 3-2 on the season and are in a five-way tie for second place. McMaster improves to a perfect 5-0 on the 2008-09 season and sit in first place of the OUA.
The Gaels opened the game flat with McMaster taking the opening sets 25-19 and 25-16 respectively. Queen's found its footing in the third rallying for a 25-23 win, but could not even the score with McMaster claiming the final frame 25-21.
Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont. was the leading scorer for the Gaels notching 15 points including 12 kills. Setter
Daniel Rosenbaum of Hamilton recorded 33 assists in the loss.
McMaster had three players with 10 points or more. Nathan Groenveld of Welland, Ont. had 16 points including 12 kills while his brother Jeremy notched 12 kills as well.
Last season, the Gaels faced McMaster in the best-of-three OUA Championship series which they lost 2-0. This year, Queen's is aiming to reclaim its OUA crown and earn its third title in four seasons. The Gaels were champions in 2006-07 besting McMaster in the finals that year.
On Sunday, Queen's will battle the Guelph Gryphon's in Guelph with the match set to begin at 3:00pm.
