Kingston, Ont. (November 8, 2008) – Queen's failed to post back-to-back wins during its opening home-stand with a 97-84 loss to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night.
Laurier exploded for over 25 point quarters in two different quarters leading to the Golden Hawks to victory. Laurier poured in 27 points in the first quarter while Queen's posted just 15 to open the game. The Gaels were forced to play catch-up after that drawing within six points heading into the fourth (67-61).
Laurier responded with a 30-point fourth quarter which ended any hopes of a Queen's comeback, though the Gaels would post 23 points in the final frame.
Mitch Leger of Kingston, was the Gaels top scorer recording 26 points for Queen's to go along with 10 rebounds. Guard
Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey had 21 points in the Gaels loss.
Laurier spread the ball throughout its offence with five players recording over 10 points or more. Kale Harrison of Stratford, Ont. was the most dominate scoring almost a third of the Hawks total points with 29. Harrison was the 2007-08 OUA west division rookie of the year.
With the weekend split, Queen's record now sits at 1-1 to open the season. They are two points behind Toronto who is 3-0. On Friday, the Gaels registered a 72-67 win over Waterloo. Next weekend Queen's will visit Guelph and Brock. Brock is the defending national champion.
