Kingston, Ont. (November 7, 2008) –
Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. was dominate as the Gaels defeated Waterloo 72-67 in season opener.
Waterloo and Queen's played just one week ago in a pre-season tournament where the Warriors defeated the Gaels by 30 points. It was a big turn-around for the Gaels having Leger in the line- up who sat out in the pre-season meeting.
Leger would shoot 10 for 18 for the game recording 26 points and nine rebounds to lead the Gaels, while rookie forward
Bernard Burgesson of Port Hawkesbury, N.S. had an exceptional debut recording six points and four rebounds.
Burgesson held the Waterloo forwards in check all game and was a defensive star.
“The last time we played they easily scored on us, we knew we had to defend and Burgesson pulled down a lot of key rebounds for us”. Coach Rob Smart stated after the game.
Queen's would also get strong play from veteran
Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey who hit five three pointers to finish the game off with 19 points, second behind Leger.
Queen's will take the early season momentum as they will now focus on Wilfrid Laurier tomorrow night at the Bartlett Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 8:00pm
