Kingston, Ont. (November 30, 2008) -
Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont. recorded three points as the Gaels defeated the Windsor Lancers 5-1 Sunday afternoon at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
Queen's captain
Cassandra Sparks of Stouffville, Ont. opened the scoring at 10:55. Windsor would find themselves in penalty trouble early giving the Gaels seven power plays in the first period alone. Conroy would capitalize on the final powerplay of the period to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead.
Windsor would settle down and play a more defensive period only allowing five shots in the second but
Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont. would notch the Gaels third goal of the game.
After a 15 minute delay in between the second and third because of a zamboni malfunction the Lancers took full advantage of the rest, scoring just 22 seconds into the third. The goal ends
Melissa John's of Unionville, Ont. shutout streak at 201 minutes.
Conroy would add her OUA leading 12th goal and second of the afternoon, after she took a pass from Kench who made a dazzling play to pass the Lancer defencemen.
Windsor would again find themselves in penalty trouble recording five infractions in the third. With two players in the box the Gaels would take a last minute powerplay and add their fifth goal off the stick of defencemen Kerstin Van Bolderen of Medina, Ohio to make the final 5-1.
Queen's will head into the break with a 9-5-0-1 and on a three game winning streak and will return to action January 10 as they will take on the University of Ontario Institute of Technology at the Kingston Memorial Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm.
