Western's explosive second half sinks Gaels 69-49

Kingston, Ont. (November 28, 2008) – Queen's losing streak was extended to three games as the Western Mustangs defeated the Gaels 69-49 using an explosive second half in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's basketball on Friday night.

Western tallied 45 points in the final two frames, while holding Queen's to only 21 to claim its sixth win of the season. The Gaels record now drops to 3-5 which positions them in a tie for fifth place with Ryerson in the OUA East. Western sits tied for second with four others in the OUA West.

Amanda Anderson of Dover Centre, Ont., scored 13 of her total 15 points in the second half leading the Mustangs in scoring. Kim Hurley of Stratford, Ont., also added 13 in 19 minutes on the floor with Lauren Parks of London, Ont. registering 12 points and nine rebounds.

OUA leading scorer, Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., dropped 12 points in the loss. She was tied as the Gaels top scorer from the evening with Alaina Porter of Burlington, Ont., who also recorded 12. Erin Skippon of Kelowna, B.C., registered 11 while Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. was the Gaels top rebounder with six..

Early in the game, the Gaels appeared primed to break the losing streak stifling Western's offence and posting a four-point 28-24 advantage at the half. Western returned to the court with vigor intent on pressuring the Gaels at every opportunity. The Mustangs proceeded to post 23 points in the third quarter and followed it up with 22 in the fourth to seal their sixth win of the season.

The Gaels will close out the first half of the 2008-09 regular season against Windsor tomorrow night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00pm at Bartlett Gymnasium.
