Ottawa (November 28, 2008) – Queen's three-game winning streak came to an unfortunate end as the second-place Ottawa Gee Gees downed the Gaels 3-1 in OUA women's volleyball on Friday.
Heading into tonight's match, the Gaels were holding a perfect 9-0 set record over the last three games, but that quickly changed as the Gaels would lose the first two sets against Ottawa 25-19 and 25-21. Queen's would rally back in the third, taking the set 25-21, but Ottawa ended the comeback in the fourth closing the game with a score of 25-21 in favour of the Gee Gees.
The Gaels saw strong defensive play from Nathalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont. recorded 13 digs along with 15 kills for a total of 16 points. Setter
Julie Lockwood of Calgary, Alta., would tally 31 assists to go along with three digs and a stuff block.
Ottawa's leader was Ariane Thibault of Rouyn- Noranda, Que., who had eight kills, eight digs, and six stuff blocks to finish 16 points which tied with Gray as the games leading scorer.
Queen's record moves to an even 5-5. With 10 games played, the Gaels are tied for third place with Toronto in the OUA East division. They are four points behind Ottawa and six behind first place York. The Gaels will break for exams and the holiday period returning to league action on January 10 when they host McMaster University.
