Kingston, Ont. (November 28, 2008) – Queen's shocked the No. 2 nationally ranked Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) on Friday securing a 2-1 overtime victory in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men's hockey action at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
Queen's joins the Carleton Ravens as one of the only two teams to have defeated UQTR this season with their record now sittings at 14-1-0-1. Meanwhile, the Gaels record improves to 6-8-0-2.
Brady Morrison of Thamesville, Ont. was the star of the game turning away 48 shots including a game saving stop in the second period which saw the second-year goalie sprawl across the crease to keep the score deadlocked at one.
“We played a full 60 minutes tonight,” said Morrison. “This game reminds us that we can play with the top teams in the country.”
Brock Ouellet of Lindsay, Ont., opened the scoring for the Gaels in the first as he would take a feed from defensemen Ben Munroe of Kingston, Ont. UQTR would tie the game late in the first with Jonathan Boutin of La Pocatiere, Que., netting UQTR's only goal.
A scoreless second and third period drew the overtime frame with Morrison turning away all four of UQTR's shots. Queen's Jared Thomson of Hamilton, Ont. capitalized at 2:39 of the overtime period firing the game winner from the slot on the Gaels second shot of overtime.
Queen's would successfully hold the nation's leading power play unit all night, killing all six of the Patriotes chances.
With the win the Gaels snapped a three game losing streak that dated back to a 3-0 loss against McGill on November 15. One of those losses also came at the hands of UQTR just last week.
Queen's will aim to ride the momentum earned from this win through tomorrow's matchup against the Concordia Stingers in less than 24 hours time. Game time is scheduled for 2:30pm at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
