Power play lifts Gaels over Guelph

Queen's wins second straight

Guelph, Ont. (November 16, 2008) - Two power play goals were the difference as Queen's would defeat the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 during a Sunday afternoon contest. 

Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont. would score her eighth goal of the season on the power play to open the scoring.  Conroy has 15 points on the season and leads the Gaels. Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont. would add another power play goal with under two minutes left in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

Guelph would cut the lead in half during the third period when Carla D'Angelo of Hamilton, Ont. would slide one past goaltender Melissa John of Unionville, Ont. making the score 2-1.  John would be steady the remainder of the game finishing with 30 saves. Thomson added an empty net to seal the victory for the Gaels which gives Guelph their first regular season loss this season. 

Thompson's two goals was the second consecutive game where she recorded two goals and she now has taken the team lead in scoring with nine.  She is second to Conroy in points with 10. 

Queen's (6-4) will have a rematch against Guelph next weekend to complete the home-and-home against the Gryphons. Game time is scheduled for 8:00pm at the Kingston Memorial Centre. Tickets are available by calling 613.533.2500.
