Ottawa (October 26, 2008) – The Gaels were denied their chance for a berth into the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's soccer final four on Sunday as the Ottawa Gee-Gee claimed their quarter-final match 1-0 against Queen's.
Queen's, who had split the season series against the Gee-Gee's this year (1-1) put in a full effort but in the end fell short of the win. Rachel Swetnam of Halifax, N.S., scored for Ottawa in the 14th minute of the first half, and the Gee-Gee's played solid defence the rest of the way to take the victory.
Jess Charron of Ottawa posted the shutout for the Gee-Gee's. Katie McKenna of Oakville, Ont., who recorded eight shutouts this season for the Gaels made seven saves but let in the game's only goal.
Queen's finishes the season with a 8-4-2 regular season mark which earned them fourth place in the OUA East Division. Last Wednesday, Queen's opened the playoffs with a win over Nipissing.
Ottawa now moves on to the women's soccer final-four which they will host. Carleton, Brock and Laurier will also contend.
NOTES: This game was originally scheduled to be played a day earlier on Saturday, but heavy rainfall and unplayable field conditions led to the game being postponed until Sunday afternoon.
