Kingston, Ont. (October 26, 2008) – Katie Boyd of Richmond Hill, Ont. made 21 saves earning her first shutout of the season as the Queen's Gaels topped the Waterloo Warriors 4-0 in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's hockey action on Sunday.
Boyd was not tested early in the game posting only six saves in the opening two periods. In the final frame, with Queen's up 3-0, Waterloo desperately blistered 15 shots at the Gaels netminder only to come away short. In three appearances with the Gaels thus far, Boyd has registered a stingy 1.13 goals against average and earned three of the Queen's four wins.
Megan McNutt of Ottawa opened the scoring for Queen's with a minute left in the first period. Cassandra Sparks of Stouffville, Ont. scored Queen's second goal of the game in at 4:47 of the second period on a power play. Rebecca Conroy of Pembroke, Ont. added an assist on that goal and scored late in the second to make the 3-0.
Amanda Morra of Pickering, Ont. added an unassisted short-handed goal at 17:58 to close the scoring.
Queen's posted 33 shots against Waterloo with Erica Bridgewater of Georgetown, Ont. making 22 saves. In the third, Waterloo replaced Bridgewater in favour of Kahla Stern of Paris, Ont.
Queens is tied for third place in the OUA with eight points and a 4-2-0-0 record. The Gaels are back on the ice next Saturday to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks in Oshawa. A day later they will travel to Waterloo to rematch against the Warriors.
