Kingston, Ont. (October 24, 2008) - Fifth-year veteran Jeff DeMeza of Calgary recorded 25 points as the Queen's Gaels opened the 2008-09 OUA men's volleyball season with a 3-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Friday night.
DeMeza registered a game high 23 kills as the Gaels took rallied to win the final three-sets to seal their first win of the season. Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont. recorded 17 kills and four aces to earn 22 points.
Second-year setter Daniel Rosenbaum of Hamilton, looked comfortable recording 50 assists in his first game taking over for departed setter Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. Miller who graduated last spring now plays professional volleyball in Sweden.
Windsor's offensive punch was led by Shane Byrne of Windsor, Ont. who tallied nine kills and 15 points while Stephen Gomes of Tecumseh, Ont. earned 14 points including 10 kills.
Queen's lost the opening set 23-25, but rallied to win the next three with set scores of 25-23; 25-17 and 25-23.
The Gaels (1-0) will host Western (1-0) on Saturday with the game set for 7:00pm. Across town Western topped Royal Military College 3-0.
