Kingston, Ont. (October 22, 2008) -
Brienna Shaw of Vancouver scored just six minutes into the game to give the Gaels the eventual victory as Queen's defeated Nipissing 2-0 in the opening round of the OUA women's soccer playoffs.
Kate McKenna of Oakville, Ont. stopped all six shots she faced including four in the second half. Entering today's match-up McKenna was ranked as one of the nation's top goalies having recorded a CIS leading seven shutouts.
Queen's sealed the win in injury time during the second half when
Jennifer Hutchinson of St. John's Nfld, took a feed from
Renee MacLellan of Kingston, Ont. to close the scoring at 2-0.
Gaels forward
Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont. continued her solid season by posting two break-a-way chances with one of her attempts hitting the post in the first half. Chamberlain recorded four shots and an assist in the contest, but was not able to get any past Nipissing's Samantha Behm of Winchester, Ont.
The fourth seeded Gaels travel to second seeded Ottawa on Saturday, October 25 to take on the Gee-Gee's in the OUA Quarter-Final match up. Ottawa is the No. 6 ranked team in the country and the Gaels split their season series against the Gee-Gee's 1-1. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00pm
