Sudbury, Ont. ( October 22, 2008) – Queen's playoff dreams were ended in chilly weather on Wednesday as the Gaels lost 2-0 to the Laurentian Voyageurs in the first round of the 2008 OUA men's soccer playoffs.
Heading into the opening playoff game, the Gaels were seeded sixth place and up against a Laurentian team who finished in third place just five points ahead of Queen's.
Laurentian came out striking getting great opportunities to score and keeping the Gaels to just three shots in the first half.
The Voyageurs got onto the board in the 20th minute as Johnny Maurizio of Hamilton put the ball past Gaels net minder
Sean Martin-Courtright of Calgary. Martin Courtright stopped four in the second half but Laurentian put the game away in the 86th minute as Davor Alisic of Charlottetown, Ont. scored ending the Gaels season.
Queen's posted six shots in the game with
Michael Arnold of London, Ont. and
Steven Irish of Deep River, Ont. each posting two.
Laurentian goalie Scott Cliff of Sudbury, Ont. recorded the shutout which was is sixth of the season including the five he had earned in the regular season.
NOTES: Laurentian had the Gaels number all season long with Queen's losing all three previous meetings… The temperature at game time was listed at plus-three, but with the wind chill it felt like negative-one.
