Queen's in action vs. Ottawa on Friday
Kingston, Ont. (October 17, 2008) – It was in their grasp, but in the end the Queen's Gaels couldn't close the door as the Ottawa Gee-Gee's captured the women's volleyball season opener 3-2 on Friday night.
Queen's opened the game claiming the first two sets 25-20, and 25-22 respectively. However, Ottawa refused to let up and reeled off three straight victories to take the first meeting between the two teams of the 2008-09 season. The final three set scores were 25-21, 25-23 and 15-13 all in favour of the Gee-Gee's.
Louise Hamill of West Vancouver was superb for the Gaels as she had 15 kills along with 15 digs.
Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont. also had a solid performance recording seven kills to go along with four blocks and five digs.
Ironically, the Gaels lost to Ottawa in their season opener last season posting a 3-1 defeat in Ottawa. Queen's is hoping to improve on a 2007-08 record which saw the Gaels finish 7-12 with a roster that contained 11 player with less than two years playing experience.
Queen's (0-1) will sit idle on Saturday evening and return to the court on October 25 when they meet the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines on October 25. Queen's next home game is November 14 against York.
