Joely Christian has been the head coach of the women’s program since 2007-08. In the six years she has been at the helm of the program, the Gaels have qualifed every year for playoffs. Under coach Christian’s direction the team has made two Final Four appearances at the Ontario Championships and in 2011-12 won the program’s first ever Conference title. That year the Gaels represented the OUA conference at the CIS Championship for the first time in the program’s history.
As a coach, Joely is fully certified NCCP Level III and is completing her diploma in High Performance Coaching from the National Coaching Institute in Ontario. Joely has guest coached with the senior national team program and in 2011
was an assistant coach with the FISU games team that competed in Shenzhen, China. Prior to joining the Gaels, Christian-Macfarlane served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Varsity Blues from 2004 to 2007. During her time with Toronto, the Varsity Blues made three consecutive OUA final four appearances, winning one silver and one bronze medal.
In 2005, she guided Team Ontario to a gold medal at the 2005 Canada Summer Games, the province’s first in women’s volleyball since 1967.
Before Christian-Macfarlane entered the coaching world, she was a successful women’s player with Canadian National Teams as well as with the Regina Cougars and the Manitoba Bisons. She competed for Team Canada as a member of both the National ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams and in 1988, she helped the National Junior Team qualify for the Junior World Championships.
At the university level, Christian-Macfarlane is a four-time Great Plains Athletics Conference first team all-star and was a first-team All-Canadian with the Regina Cougars in 1989-90. After transferring to the Manitoba Bisons in 1993-94, Christian-Macfarlane helped the Bisons capture back-to-back bronze medals at the CIAU Championships. She currently ranks eighth all-time on the Bisons single season kill efficiency list after hitting 29% during her first season as a Bison.
