Strength and Conditioning
The Strength and Conditioning Program for Queen’s varsity athletes fosters the development of a strong, healthy and successful athlete. Professional staff design and implement attainable and effective conditioning programs that revolve around the concept of a ‘Complete Athlete’. This is the type of athlete who performs at the highest level with minimal injury and maximal commitment to training, competition and academics.
This program succeeds based on the following four concepts:
- Underlying development of mobility and stability before strength
- Maintenance of minimal injury and regular testing throughout an athletes varsity career
- Providing up to date training programs that prioritize sport specific movements and training modes
- Developing a “complete athlete” by providing information in a variety of relevant topics
Functional mobility screens and athlete testing results provide the groundwork for designing programs that can assist in preventing future injury. Discovering dysfunctions in the movement of the body can enable the Strength and Conditioning Staff to supplement the team training program with personalized exercises that correct any issues.
Testing results provide both motivation and direction for the athlete during the off-season. Program staff will adapt a training program to suit each individual’s performance goals. The continuation of athlete screening and testing throughout a varsity career enables staff to adapt training programs to suit the development of the athlete.
Professionally trained staff continually apply current methods and techniques to deliver top results from athletes. In combination with traditional strength, speed and skill development techniques, current training trends such as stability balls, agility ladders, medicine balls and dynamic warm-up patterns are utilized to develop exceptional team training programs.
Athletes will receive a weekly layout of their training which will develop on a 2-3 week basis throughout both the competitive and non-competitive seasons.
The ‘Complete Athlete’ is further developed through clinics and seminars. Nutrition seminars cover topics including meal planning at home, eating in residence and supplementation. Clinics offered throughout the year include speed development, Olympic lifting technique and functional training techniques. Team training sessions also provide high energy workouts that bring team unity and motivation to the field, court or arena.
Varsity athletes at Queen’s earn the privilege of being guided by professionals who are committed to improving athletic performance.
