Queen's Athletics & Recreation is establishing full-time coaching positions for both its men's and women's soccer and rugby programs, creating opportunities for sustained and strategic planning for both sports.
The roles will position Queen's amongst the U SPORTS leaders in full-time coaching for varsity teams.
"This investment in coaching leadership will have an immediate, positive impact on our student-athletes, and help move us towards a longer-term goal of consistently ranking among the best teams in the country and regularly competing for provincial and national championships," says
Jeff Downie, Director, Business Development and Operations, Queen's Athletics & Recreation. "Our soccer and rugby programs have been very successful in the past, and we look forward to building on that success with full-time leadership in place."
Athletics & Recreation is able to create the positions through partnerships with the Kingston sports community and Gaels alumni. One of the new full-time soccer coaches will be shared with the Kingston Clippers Soccer Club, and the rugby positions were made possible because of the generous support of former athletes.
"This is a big step forward for our teams, only made possible because of great partners willing to invest in coaching leadership at Queen's and in Kingston," says Downie.
Searches are underway for all four positions, with the aim of having the coaches in place well before the start of the 2017-18 season.
