Queen's Sailing finish first at Can/Am Cup

The annual Canadian-American Cup was held this weekend at Kingston Yacht Club, the home of the Queen's Gaels. The Queen's sailing team captured first place overall in the regatta.

The annual regatta hosted athletes from 14 different schools across North America, including Penn State, Rochester Institute of Technology and Dalhousie University to name a few.

The regatta kicked off on Saturday, as teams arrived at 9am for report time and a competitors meeting held by Queen's representative Zac Baum and PRO Ross Cameron.

The day started out with 15-18 knot winds from the North East, but later dropped to 8 to 12 knots of wind and clocked North. The A division left the dock for their first race at 9:45am. After a large barge going through the race course caused an AP on the first start, racing started off at 10:20am.

Both A and B fleets had fast sets on the water and were able to get in three full rotations, with twelve races in total. Current was a major factor affecting many teams on the water today and resulted in multiple O.C.S. penalties across the board.

Sunday had teams arrive again at 9am for report time and were met with an AP on shore due to lack of breeze.

Around 11am, the wind filled in from the South-West at 4-6 knots and built to 15 knots to wrap up the last few races. Both A and B fleets had fast sets on the water with the RC only a few hundred feet away from shore, and were able to get in two full rotations, with eight races in total. No protests were filed.

Gaels PRO Ross Cameron was able to get in twenty races off over two days.

By the end of the weekend, the Queen's sailing team took first place, with second going to McMaster, and third spot to more Gaels sailors.

Gaels Race at Cornell University

Members of the Queen's Sailing Team travelled to Ithaca, New York this weekend for the Susan Rogers Memorial Regatta hosted by Cornell University.

The first day of racing on Cayuga Lake was fast-paced with pristine racing conditions, as there was a great deal of wind and large waves out of the North all day. All races were sailed on a windward leeward course with a windward offset and leeward gate, while all courses were W4's.

The Gaels Team A consisted of Natalie Tanczak and Clara Gravely. The Queen's duo did well in the heavy wind, averaging scores around the top five of the fleet. Switching off with Gaels Team B sailors Kayla Simmons and Sarah Sackville every two races, the Queen's team had a strong showing.

Overall, the team pulled through the day in the cold, wet weather with spirit. Together, the team placed in the top half of the fleet over the course of the eight races in the first day.

The second day of the regatta brought drastically different weather conditions as it was hot and sunny with no wind. Fleet A drifted for three hours getting only one race off before heading in to switch with B Fleet. Team B saw equally poor wind conditions with gust of three knots and very shifty wind. The Gaels Team B was unable to to race on the second day due to the conditions, leaving the team in seventh place overall at the end of the regatta.
