No. 6 Gaels tame Thunderwolves, stretch win streak to five games

THUNDER BAY, Ont. (November 25, 2016)- Marianne Alarie tallied a game-high 22 points, and the No. 6 ranked Queen's Gaels women's basketball team earned its fifth-straight victory to begin the regular season, topping the Lakehead Thunderwolves 68-61.

GAME FLOW
Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) shot 9-of-20 from the field, and drained two three-point buckets in 30 minutes of court-time for the Gaels. Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.) picked up 14 points and a team-high four steals, while Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) recorded 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.

Veronika Lavergne (Kingston, Ont.) rounded out the scoring with 11 points and six rebounds for Queen's, who shot 42.4% (25-59) from the field and an impressive 50% (6-12) from beyond the arc. The Thunderwolves struggled from three-point range, draining just two of 21 attempts (9.5%) while working at a 33.8% (24-71) efficiency overall.

The Gaels remained undefeated in conference play despite committing 28 turnovers, while the Thunderwolves turned the ball over on 21 occasions. The Thunderwolves bench also outscored Queen's 22-7, and got the deficit down to two points in the final quarter. But a 9-1 run by the Gaels that included five points by Alarie and four by Lavergne put the contest out of reach.
