Football Preview - Gaels host Windsor on Homecoming Saturday

The Queen's football team (2-4) hosts the Windsor Lancers (2-4) in a virtual must-win game for both teams at the revitalized Richardson Stadium on Homecoming Saturday at 1pm.

Queen's and Windsor are stuck in a four-way tie along with Guelph and York for the sixth and final OUA Playoff spot. A loss on Saturday all but extinguishes the playoff hopes of the losing team.

Last weekend, the Gaels suffered a 36-6 loss to No.8 McMaster, who held Queen's to single digits for the first time this year. The rookie kicker for the tricolour, Nick Liberatore (Dartmout, NS), was the only Gael on the scoreboard last Friday night, going a perfect 2-2 on field goals. As the punter, Liberatore also recorded his first CIS rush, scampering for 21 yards and a first down on a fake. On defence, Nelkas Kwemo (Montreal) recorded a season-high nine solo tackles, including a tackle for a loss, to finish the day with 9.5 total tackles. Nicholas Fraser-Greene (Mississauga, Ont.) also made an impact on the defensive side of the ball, making his second interception of the season to hold McMaster off the scoreboard in the first quarter. The Queen's offence will be looking to bounce back after a tough outing against McMaster's strong defence. In particular, the Gaels had trouble maintaining possession of the ball, turning it over four times over the course of the game.

Windsor enters this weekend's game after a Thanksgiving loss at Carleton, 53-10. The Lancers rookie kicker, Clark Green, also scored all of his team's points in their last game, hitting three field goals and earning a single on a rouge. Windsor's return game was strong against the Ravens, as Evan Martin and Kaeden Walls combined for nearly 300 yards, including three runs of 50+ yards. Tarki Bonas led the Lancers defence last week with five solo tackles, but teammate Daniel Metcalfe is tied for fourth in the OUA with 46.5 total tackles this season. On offence, Terrence Crawford broke the 100-yard mark on the ground for the fifth straight game, while also hauling in a team-high 41 receiving yards.
