Queen's hosts East Sectional Squash Tournament

KINGSTON, Ont. - This past weekend, the Gaels hosted the Jesters League East Sectional tournament for both men's and women's teams. The tournament was a great success, with much of the Queen's community coming out to show their support.

The women had yet another undefeated weekend, bringing in a total of 20 points to retain their spot as first in the Jesters University League. Of note was #2 Alysha Anzik's victory in a 5-game nail biter against the University of Toronto, and #6 and #7's Sadie Wilson and Charlotte Ross' stellar performances as they swept UofT, Brock, and McGill all in 3-0 matches. One of the highlights of the weekend was the successful performance of the "Queen's 2" exhibition team, whose encouragement to participate in the tournament demonstrates the inclusive spirit of the University Squash community. Queen's very own coach Lisa Coates had three solid wins over the weekend at the #2 position. The Queen's women are looking forward to OUA Championships this coming weekend in St. Catharines Ont., and are hoping to take home the OUA Gold medal for the second season in a row.

In the men's action, Queen's started off the weekend on Saturday facing the Brock Badgers. Wilfred Ip and Bernard Cheng secured the only wins for the Gaels as the team went down 5-2. On Sunday, Queen's rallied hard against the McGill Redmen who proved to be too strong, resulting in a 7-0 loss. In the last match of the weekend, the Gaels met their rivals from Toronto. Despite strong wins from Cheng and first year rookie Kevin Chong, the Gaels came up short losing 5-2 to the Blues. Queen's had a notable performance from Cheng who won both of his matches. With the conclusion of this tournament, the Gaels finish in fourth place in the Jester's league east division and will not advance to the playoff finals. The Gaels will, however, look forward to meeting their opponents again at the OUA championships along with the Women coming up next weekend, January 29-31.
