Milner and Wilson named major award winners at Queen's Varsity Clubs athletic banquet

KINGSTON, Ont. (March 24, 2015) – Erin Milner (Newmarket, Ont.) of synchronized swimming and Ryan Wilson (Toronto) of men's ultimate, were named the top student-athletes for the 2014-15 season at the 79th annual Colour Awards Varsity Club athletic banquet Tuesday night at the ARC Main Gym.
 
Milner was awarded the Marion Ross trophy, which is given to the top Varsity Club female student-athlete. A three-time medalist at the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League (CUSSL) the fourth-year Kinesiology student finishes her time at Queen's having placed in the top five in all meets over the last four years. As part of the Queen's Yellow team her accolades at the CUSSL include gold in 2014 and two bronze coming in 2012 and 2015.
 
The Newmarket, Ontario native also excels in the classroom, as she is a two-time Academic All-Star in her career and was named a CUSSL All-Canadian in 2015. A leader on the team she dedicated her time spending countless hours choreographing routines to bring to practice for teammates to learn and organizing team workouts.
 
Wilson, a fourth-year Life Science student was named the winner of the Jack Jarvis trophy, which is awarded to the top Varsity Club male student-athlete. A captain and student-coach with men's ultimate, Wilson has been part of two national silver medal teams in his time at Queen's.
 
This past season, in which Wilson was captain for his third straight year, Wilson and the Gaels took a third place finish at the Canadian Eastern University Championships after losing just one game. At nationals the team went all the way to the championship final where they finished one point shy of a championship taking the silver. Wilson finishes his career as a two-time academic all-star and was named the team rookie of the year to start and MVP to finish his career.
 
On Tuesday night the Award of Merit Trophy was presented to the Queen's women's squash team who won both the OUA and Jesters League Championship banners. The Gaels dominated the competition throughout the season staying undefeated in the process.
 
At the OUA Championship the Gaels took home four gold and two silver over the six flight divisions while sweeping the championship awards as Heather White (Calgary) was named MVP, Natasha Anzik (St. Catharines, Ont.) was the rookie of the year and Lisa Coates won coach of the year. After that, the Gaels finished off the Jesters League season with another championship banner.
 
The Alfie Pierce award recipients for the top club rookies of the year were Haley Golding (Newcastle, Ont.) from cycling and Austin O'Boyle (Toronto) from baseball. Golding was a key part of the cycling team clinching their fifth consecutive University Cup this year. She finished as the women's A division champion finishing with two silver medals in races throughout the season. O'Boyle took the OUA by storm in his first season after finishing with a team leading .391 batting average which was sixth best in the entire league. For his efforts he took home the OUA baseball rookie of the year award playing two pivotal positions for the Gaels at shortstop and pitcher.
 
Throughout the course of the evening, each Varsity Club also honoured their team award winners as the individual team leaders spoke of their team's successes throughout the year.
 
Tomorrow evening, Queen's Athletics and Recreation will host the Colour Awards Varsity Team athletic banquet. Among the awards announced on Wednesday will be the Varsity Team rookies of the year, Varsity Team of Year as well as the Outstanding Performance of the Year. Also handed out will be the PHE'55 Alumnae Award and the Jenkins Trophy, which are awarded to the top fourth or fifth year student-athletes.
